October – Red-browed Finches

Happy October!! It’s hard to comprehend that we are in the 10th month of the year already, where did the time go?! This month on the Bird’s-eye view calendar your pinup is a group of Red-browed finches (Neochmia temporalis). Did you know that a group of finches is called a ‘charm’?

I took this photo at Bellthorpe Stays last year of the ‘charm’ splashing in the bird bath. I took many photos to overcome the challenge of getting the whole group in focus and clear. They are very active little birds.

In September this year, I visited Bellthorpe Stays again and had the pleasure of watching these Red-browed finches flit about the place. If I didn’t know they were sitting in the tree (they are very little!) I could definitely hear them whizz past my ear with the ‘drrrrr drrrr’ sound their wings make. It’s amazing to watch them, but also a little distracting when trying to bird watch.

My favourite photo this time, was of a white-headed pigeon (remember these guys were your July pinup) tolerating the red-browed finches in the feeder.

Speaking of calendars, a little reminder that if you haven’t ordered yours yet for next year, I have three left. You can order direct from me or via my Etsy Shop.

I hope your October is outstanding and don’t forget it’s Aussie Bird Count week from 20-26 October, 2025. Take just 20 minutes and count the birds in your backyard or your favourite place in nature. You can find out more on BirdLife Australia’s Aussie Bird Count website.
