December dazzler – Spangled Drongo

Hi friends! Who else is in denial that it is December?! At least we have a beautiful bird to look at on the Bird’s-eye view calendar. This month your December bird is a Spangled Drongo that I photographed on one of my local walking adventures. They have a beautiful teal and pewter sheen on their feathers when the sun hits and an unusual forked tail. As Australia’s only drongo, they dazzle with their aerial acrobatics catching insects on the fly (and they have cool whiskers to help them do this). Spangled drongos are also excellent mimics. Our resident “Keith” is an expert at mimicking the alarm call that the pied butcherbirds make. Very effective at sending the birds flying in every direction!

I hope your end to the year is not too hectic! If you have enjoyed my calendar this year, I still have some calendars available for next year if you haven’t got yours yet. Also, if you are looking for gifts (some of which may even be on sale), please consider looking at my Etsy shop or contact me directly (drmelhyde@gmail.com) or on socials for questions/orders.

Thanks so much for sharing your year with me and my Australian bird photos! I hope you have enjoyed the blog. Stay tuned for next year.

Best wishes and thanks so much for your support,

Mel xx
