Happy May friends! This month on our Bird’s-eye view calendar we have a beautiful Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis). Have you ever seen one? Usually you hear them before you see them, with their high pitched little peeps in the shrubs and bushes.
They are the most adorable little birds, and watching a whole group of them is a delight. The Silvereye’s plumage looks slightly different depending on where they live in Australia, but the distinguishing feature they all have is the little white ring around their eyes.
I was quite excited to take this photo of our May pin-up and to find that it wasn’t blurry! Silvereyes like to jump around a lot (as is the case with most little birds) and they are often hidden by branches in bushes. This little one was right out in the open, flitting about above our heads (yes of course I had Mum my trusty bird spotter with me!) and it stayed still long enough for me to get it in focus and take the photo.
Have a listen to the Silverye’s call on ebird and maybe you will discover them in your garden or local park!
On a side note, if you love birds and podcasts, there’s a fabulous podcast called “Weekend Birder” hosted by Kirsty Costa. I don’t know Kirsty and nobody is giving me any incentive to tell you about this podcast, I just love it! If you’d like to listen (you can listen by clicking on an episode or through one of your apps), check it out here. The episodes are nice and short but super interesting, at least I think so!
May your May be a beautiful one filled with lots of birds!
