August – Galah

Hello friends and hello August! I hope it is a great month for you. This month we welcome our Galah mates as our August Bird’s-eye view calendar pinup.

My brother and I were walking along the beach at Bribie Island and saw a magnificent hollowed out tree. We were admiring how beautiful it was when out popped a little pink feathered head followed by another. The heads disappeared and popped out another hole in the tree. A great hiding place and likely nesting place for this galah pair.

My brother waited very patiently while I tried to take a photo of both galahs close together. It was a little tricky since the galahs kept disappearing back inside the hollow. Eventually, I managed to take the photo I hoped for.

If you are wondering how to tell which galah is female, have a look at the eye colour. The female galah has red eyes, and the male has brown eyes. Aside from their eye colour, galahs male and female galahs look similar.

Juvenile galahs have more grey feathers on their chest and back and their crest has more pink or a pinkish tinge to it. Just like this little sweet thing in the image below.

Galahs are one of those birds that have such personality, and cheekiness in abundance. I also love the colour variations you can see in the pink feathers depending on how they light illuminates them. There is a cool little article by Birdlife Australia about how birds make pink if you are interested.

Don’t forget to place your order for Bird’s-eye view calendars for next year! Also, stay tuned for the end of year gifting catalogue coming soon. Of course you can buy gifts from year-round, just send me a message if you would like something or check out my Etsy Shop.
