October – Scaly-breasted lorikeet

Welcome to October! I hope the birds are abundant where you are, it is certainly the month for it here. The return of the Sacred kingfishers with their incessant “peep-peep-peep” is always a welcome sound. I also love hearing the large cuckoos again with the endless ‘coo-ee’ sound of the Pacific Koels through the day and night, and the prehistoric sounding call of the Channel-billed cuckoo. I could go on, but I won’t because our pin-up this month is none of those birds!

On your calendar this month, you will see the gorgeous Scaly-breasted lorikeet (Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus). They blend in so well with their beautiful green and yellow. They are smaller than your average Rainbow Lorikeet and they also sound a bit different. I took this photo on the way home from a long walk that was not very fruitful for bird photography. I saw something out of the corner of my eye down a side path as I walked past and I decided to go back and check. I am glad I did because this beautiful Scaly-breasted lorikeet was perched about to feed on the gum flowers. I only had time for a couple of shots (and by some miracle one of them was in focus!) before it flew away. It is one of very few photos I have of Scaly-breasted lorikeets so it is a favoured and lucky photo for me. Do you have them at or near your house?

This month, we have cushion covers on sale for 20% off if you order direct from me or from my Etsy Shop.

As you may have seen from my Facebook posts, we also have a range of new Christmas card designs, some new gift tag and bookmark designs, and some new Pied Oystercatcher products for those who love these very charismatic birds. All can be ordered direct from me or my Etsy Shop.

A final reminder for October – mark your calendar for Birdlife Australia’s Aussie Bird Count from 14-20 October. For a bit of fun, you can try one of the Aussie Bird Quizzes.

Thank you for being here! I hope your October is a beautiful, productive, bird-filled month.
