September – Bush Stone-Curlew

Happy official first day of Spring (although it very much feels like Summer where I am)! The beautiful pin-up on your calendar this month is a pair of Bush Stone-curlews (Burhinus grallarius), also known as Bush Thick-knees.

I took this photo in the park near my house a couple of years ago. It was an unusual sighting for me to see this pair, and they only stayed in the location for a couple of weeks. They had one egg, but sadly it was not meant to be anything more than that. I have seen them once since then on a neighbour’s driveway, but I often hear them each night.

Have you ever heard a Bush Stone-curlew calling? It is an eerie, mournful wail that can be heard at quite a distance! Have a listen on ebird if you haven’t heard them before. If you’re on instagram, there’s an account I love to follow called ‘Friends of the floof‘. I don’t know the account holder but I love their posts of curlew behaviour and photos. Just wonderful, so check them out if you get a chance (I think they may also be on YouTube).

What’s happening this month? I’m glad you asked! This month mousepads are on sale for 20% off if you order direct from me or from my Etsy Shop. I have just added some new superb fairywren products to my shop. These are also available to order direct from me. I have some new products coming a bit later this month including Australian bird gift tags, new notepad designs, and a limited edition bird art calendar. So stay tuned!

Final reminder for anyone wishing to have a pet portrait done in time for Christmas – September the 8th is the last day to book and send photos for guaranteed delivery by Christmas (Australia only). After this point, you can still book and I will do my best to meet timeframes, but I do not guarantee delivery by Christmas. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Info about pet portraits can be found on my website.

I hope September is good to you and you have a fabulous month!
